Hello, lovely readers, here
on The Corner 4 Women. It's your favourite co-writing
duo here, bringing a sprinkle of humour to the serious business
of planning. Today, we're delving into a topic hotter than
a British summer, "Backup Plans". Are they
the safety nets we think they are, or just a trap for the
unwary?
Let's start with a familiar
scenario: You're planning a picnic. You've got your blanket,
your best china, and a basket heaving with goodies. But
wait, what if it rains? Enter "Plan B"
the indoor picnic. Cosy, but not quite the same, right?
This is where things get interesting.
Research from the University of Pennsylvania throws a spanner
in the works. They say having a Plan B could mean your Plan
A is more likely to fail. It's like telling yourself you'll
go for a run, but if it looks even slightly overcast, you'll
watch TV instead. Suddenly, those clouds look mighty threatening,
don't they?
The study suggests that when
we have a fallback, our motivation to see Plan A through
wanes. It's human nature, why put in the hard yards when
there's an easier path? But here's the kicker: the participants
without a Plan B were more likely to achieve their goals.
They had no safety net, so they just had to walk the tightrope.
Now, we're not saying throw
caution to the wind. After all, who doesn't love a good
list of pros and cons? It's about timing. Maybe, just maybe,
we should give Plan A our all before we even think about
Plan B.
So, what's our take? We say,
embrace the uncertainty. Give Plan A the old college try.
And if it doesn't work out? Well, that's when you get creative.
Because sometimes, the best plans are the ones you make
up on the spot, and in the now. In the end, these types
of on the spot plan B's usually end up being far more rewarding
and exciting, than your original idea. So all's well that
ends well, as the saying goes.
